Rwanda Celebrates 31st Anniversary of Liberation Day (Kwibohora31): A Milestone of Liberation and Reconstruction

Rwanda will celebrate Kwibohora31, the 31st Anniversary of Liberation Day, one of the most significant milestones in the country's contemporary history, on July 4th

The theme of this year, "Rwanda's Journey Continues," is indicative of the nation's continuous advancements since 1994. Liberation Day marks the end of the genocidal regime and the beginning of a new era in which all Rwandans enjoy equal rights, free from systematic marginalization and exclusion. Since then, July 4th has been celebrated not only as the end of a conflict, but as the beginning of a national project founded on peace, development, and human dignity.

The date is celebrated annually in Rwanda and around the world with official ceremonies, speeches, memorial acts, and military parades. In his address during Kwibohora 30, President Paul Kagame stated: “Real liberation begins when guns fall silent.” The phrase has become emblematic of Rwanda’s philosophy of reconciliation, marking the transition from the silence of arms to the building of institutions, citizenship, and belonging.

In 2025, H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda will once again address the nation and the world on July 4th at 2:30 p.m. Kigali time (9:30 a.m. Brasília time) in an official virtual broadcast by RBA, reaffirming Rwanda’s commitment to peace, sovereignty, and global cooperation.

In Brazil, the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Brasília will host the second official Kwibohora celebration next week, bringing together government authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, partners, and civil society.

The event marks a new phase in Rwanda’s diplomatic presence in the country, deepening political and economic dialogue between the two nations. Since its establishment, the diplomatic mission in Brasília has worked to strengthen bridges of cooperation in areas such as agriculture, technology, education, trade, and the environment

The first edition of the Kwibohora celebration in Brazil took place on July 29th, 2024. This year, the continuity of the event symbolizes not only the memory of liberation, but also the growth of an active and constructive diplomacy that is drawing Rwanda closer to Latin America. By bringing the living memory of its national reconstruction to Brazil, the country shares a story of collective resilience and offers a perspective of cooperation grounded in shared values of justice, innovation, and peace.

Kwibohora31 is, therefore, more than a national celebration; it is a global invitation to contemplate the potential futures that may emerge in the aftermath of conflict. In the Brazilian context, it also serves as a symbol of partnership and presence, fortifying the bonds between Rwanda and Brazil and establishing a future of mutual respect and exchange among nations.
